What is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.

It was invented in the 1830s by Adolphe Quetelet, a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician, and sociologist. While it was originally designed for population statistics, it has become the standard for assessing individual weight categories.

Is BMI Accurate?

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it is not diagnostic of the body fatness or the health of an individual. For example:

  • Athletes: Muscle weighs more than fat. A bodybuilder might have a "obese" BMI despite having very low body fat.
  • Elderly: Older adults tend to lose muscle mass, so they might have more body fat than younger people with the same BMI.
