Calculate Density, Mass, or Volume.

Density describes how tightly matter is packed together. It is the reason a giant ship floats while a tiny pebble sinks. The formula Density = Mass / Volume (ρ=m/V) helps us identify materials, design buoyant objects, and understand fluid mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dense Truth

1. Archimedes & "Eureka!"

The most famous story in physics: King Hiero II suspected his new crown wasn't pure gold. Archimedes, while taking a bath, realized the water level rose as he got in. He knew that volume could be measured by displacement. He ran naked through the streets shouting "Eureka!" (I have found it!). By measuring the crown's mass and its displaced volume, he calculated its density and proved it was a fake (mixed with silver).

2. Will it Float?

It's simple: If an object is less dense than the fluid it's in, it floats.
Water density = 1000 kg/m³.
Wood density ≈ 700 kg/m³ (Floats).
Steel density ≈ 8000 kg/m³ (Sinks).
Note: Steel ships float because they are hollow, making their average density (steel + air) less than water.

3. FAQ

Q: What is the density of air?

At sea level, air is about 1.225 kg/m³. It seems light, but the air in an average room weighs as much as an adult human (~70kg)!
